Digital Competence Overview
Digital Competence describes the technology-related skills you need to perform effectively in today’s world. Whether this is at home, at school or in the office. There are 5 Digital Competence Areas to explore:
- Information and data literacy
- Communication and collaboration
- Digital content creation
- Safety
- Problem solving
This module gives you a quick overview of the 5 Competence Areas. The following modules give you a detailed look at the competences in each of the 5 areas. Also, we provide everyday examples of how these competences can be put to use, at different levels of proficiency.

Digital Competence Area 1 - Information and Data Literacy
Information and data literacy is the first Digital Competence area. This aims to build your understanding and skills about information and data. You can then articulate the skill sets you need at home, at school, or at the office. In this area, we will guide you through the following aspects of working with data:
- Information and data literacy
- Browsing and searching
- Evaluating data
- Managing data

Digital Competence Area 2 - Communication and Collaboration
Communication and collaboration is the second Digital Competence area, allowing a group of people to achieve a common goal by sharing their ideas and skills. This area will cover:

- Collaborating
- Netiquette
- Managing identity

Digital Competence Area 3 - Digital Content Creation
Digital content creation is the third Digital Competence Area. This is about how you use digital resources and technology to create digital media. This creative process can involve you in using any of the following competence:

- Integrating and re-elaborating
- Copyright and licenses
- Programming

Digital Competence Area 4 - Safety
Safety is the fourth Digital Competence area. This important information helps you to maximize personal safety, and minimize security risks to your private information and property. You will learn about:
- Device protection
- Health and well-being protection
- Personal data and privacy protection
- Environmental protection

Digital Competence Area 5 - Problem Solving
Problem solving is the fifth Digital Competence Area. This describes the skills you need to:
- Solve technical problems
- Identify needs and technological responses
- Creatively use digital technologies
- Identifying digital competence gaps
